I'
I CITY OF ARDEN IDLLS
It MEMORANDUM
DATE: June 2, 1997
I TO: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrator
I FROM: Dwayne Stafford, Public Works Superintendent ~.
SUBJECT: Blacktop Roller and Trailer Purchase
I
Back~ound
I The Public Works Department has budgeted $24,000 for the purchase of a n~w blacktop roller
and a trailer in 1997, which would be capable of hauling the roller or the City's Case Skid Steer
Loader.
I The current roller is approximately 20 years old and has a history of mechanical problems.
Newer rollers are more maneuverable and compact better, due to the addition of vibrating roller
I drums and articulating steering.
Ie The current roller trailer is also about 20 years old and in poor condition. The trailer is too
narrow to haul the skid steer loader, consequently the skid steer is either driven down the road at
5 m.p.h. or hauled on one of Parks Department trailers. These trailers are designed for mowers
I and not 6,000 lb. loaders.
Evaluation
I The Public Works Department has looked at three (3) brands of rollers. All three (3) brands are
approximately the same size and weight with prices ranging from $9,690 to $11,794.
I While all three (3) brands of rollers considered have good reputations, only the Wacker brand
roller offered the features desired by Public Works, such as; articulating steering, which increases
maneuverability for working on small areas; vibrating rollers, which pack blacktop harder and
I over a wider temperature range; and double drum drive, which increases mobility on slopes in
soft conditions and when loading.
I Attached are specifications for all three (3) machines and price quotes.
I The Beuthling roller costs $9,690. This is the smallest of the three (3) rollers (by shipping
weight) and has none of the three (3) features listed above.
I The Wacker roller costs $11,444. This is the middle weight model of the three (3) rollers and has
all of the features important to Public Works.
t'
I
----- -------------
