I I CITY OF ARDEN HILLS -- MEMORANDUM DATE: June 3, 1997 I TO: Brian Fritsinger, City Administrator y> I FROM: Dwayne Stafford, Public Works Superintendent I SUBJECT: Sewer Televising Report Backvound I The Public Works Department had contracted out cleaning and televising of approximately 23,000 feet of sanitary sewer lines last winter, as a result of the Metropolitan Council's grant of $10,000 to Arden Hills for inflow and infiltration study. I Having reviewed the video tapes from televising, the Public Works Superintendent realizes that a I substantial amount of work is necessary to insure continued service from these lines. Problems Identified Ie Several segments of sewer line are leaking badly. Clean ground water is getting into the system through cracks and bad joints. (infiltration) I One area on Lake Lane has approximately 3' of line where the top of the pipe is missing. Many areas have significant root problems which the television camera could not penetrate. I Corrective Repairs Trenchless sewer repair is a relatively new technique. It is now possible to repair most defects I from above ground without disturbing any ()fthe surrounding area Typically, this method of repair is much cheaper and more resident friendly, I Today's technology allows chemicals to be forced through a leaking joint, which solidify the soils around the pipe, and stop the leak 100 percent. We can install short segments of pipe liner I as was done on Oak Avenue, which corrected pipe failures of2' to 6' in length. It is also common to reline entire segments of sewer pipe from manhole to manhole. I Recommendation The Public Works Superintendent recommends Council allow the City Engineers to assess the corrective measures needed and prepare a report indicating the type of repairs recommended.
