I
Memorandum, Monthly Department Head Report I
Page Two -I
July 22, 1997
A lift station was painted by graffiti artists and this was cleaned up the same week. The I
department contacted the Ramsey County Sheriff's deputy assigned specifically to graffiti who
inspected the damage.
The Public Works Superintendent had each employee, in addition to Mr. Post and Bill Gillies. I
a Public Safety Commission member, complete an evaluation form on the two water meter
finalists, Every form came back recommending the City stick with Badger meters. This was I
a very tough call for the Superintendent as both companies seemed to have a good
presentation, and both field demonstrations proved the equipment would do the job.
Due to the recent rains, department employees have had to check many storm sewers at the I
request of residents who claim they didn't do the job during several of the heavy rains. No I
problems were found except an occasional build up of debris at some storm water intakes.
The Superintendent met with about a dozen residents with wet basements this month. Several
are filing damage claims against the City. I
After inspecting the problems, most seemed to be the result of landscaping, or design. Only
one seemed to be the result of storm sewers not taking the water away quick enough; however, ..
this was an area at the bottom of a hill which took an enormous amount of water in a very
short period of time.
1997 Street Proiects I
The seal coating is complete, except for Snelling Avenue from Highway 96 south to
Briarknoll. This segment gets the slurry coat technique which the Public Works I
Superintendent had asked that the City tryout.
No more of the overlay work has been done. About half of his work remains. I
The reconstruction areas all have the first coat of blacktop now, and black dirt has been placed I
and graded behind the curbs. Most of the sod work will be complete by Friday, the 25th.
1996 Street Projects I
The Public Works staff had compiled a punch list with the City Engineer last fall and this
spring. Nothing has been done on it yet. Mr. Stonehouse is doing his best to get action, but
apparently the contractor doesn't need the final payment. I
The Public Works Superintendent has had a very difficult month, and would like to thank the
many staff and Council for their support. The Superintendent feels that staff has become I
closer and gained even more respect for each other as a result of this.
DSlsls ..
I
