I
I
f' SEXUAL HARASSMENT
The City of Arden Hills intends to maintain a work environment free of sexual harassment,
I a form of sex discrimination prohibited by law. Sexual harassment demeans people and
creates unacceptable stress for the entire organization. The City will not tolerate sexual
harassment of its employees by any person: employees, elected officials, or members
I of the public.
Sexual harassment is:
I 1. Unwelcomed or unwanted sexual advances such as, but not limited to: patting,
pinching, brushing up against, hugging, cornering, kissing, fondling, or any other
I similar physical contact considered unacceptable by another individual.
2. Requests or demands for sexual favors. This includes subtle or blatant
I expectations, pressures or requests for any type of sexual favor accompanied by
an implied or stated promise of preferential treatment or negative consequence
concerning one's employment status.
I 3. Verbal abuse or kidding that is sex-oriented and considered unacceptable by
another individual. This includes commenting about an individual's body or
Ie appearance where such comments go beyond mere courtesy; telling "dirty jokes"
that are clearly unwanted and considered offensive by others; or any other
tasteless, sexually-oriented comments, innuendoes or actions that offend others.
I 4. Creating a work environment that is intimidating, hostile or offensive because of
unwelcome or unwanted sexually-oriented conversations, suggestions, requests,
I demands, physical contacts or attentions.
Employees who believe they have experienced sexual harassment or who know of
I conduct they believe might constitute sexual harassment toward an employee must report
such alleged harassment to their supervisor, another supervisor, or the City Administrator.
The supervisor who receives the report should inform the City Administrator in confidence
I as soon as possible. A supervisor who becomes aware of sexual harassment but fails
to take immediate action against it will be subject to discipline. Failure to take immediate
action against believed harassment is viewed by the courts as condoning the behavior.
I A prompt and confidential investigation will be conducted by the City and fair
consideration will be given to all of the facts presented Any supervisor, manager or
I employee who has been found, after appropriate investigation, to have sexually harassed
another employee will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including
termination.
I It is a violation of the law for any supervisor or employee to retaliate against a person
it who files a sexual harassment complaint.
I
