. Site development should not destroy, damage nor alter any significant water
body, waterway, wetland, woodland or other wildlife habitat within the unit.
Development (location and installation of recreation facilities) should respect
the integrity of the existing natural character of the site and the carrying
capacity of the resource base. Development within the "natural" or
"undisturbed" areas should be limited to interpretive or hiking trails.
Roadways, parking lots, buildings and intense use areas should be located
in and through those areas that already have been disturbed (i.e. dormant
agricultural fields, former homesites, existing dirt roadways), Those
"disturbed areas" not subject to facility development should be restored to a
natural state and subsequently managed as "protection" open space.
The following existing factors will influence site development:
1, Segmenting Roads - County roads (County Roads H and I) and arterial
highways (U.S. Highway 10 and Interstate Highway 35W) are physical
barriers that divide the corridor into three distinct segments. The
separation interrupts the continuity of trail use between segments, and
poses some safety concerns with regard to inter-segment circulation.
2, Box Culverts and Bridges - nine bridges (concrete box culverts, timber
. trestles) have been constructed across Rice Creek within the corridor.
Although all of the structures are of adequate size to accommodate the
passage of canoes during periods of normal rainfall, boulders that have
been placed at the inlets and outlets to slow the flow of water interfere
with the uninterrupted passage of canoes.
Location Use Type Size
County Road J Road Concrete Box Culvert 10' high x 17' lono
Lexington Avenue Trail Timber 20' long
Lexington Avenue Road Box Culvert 60' wide x 40' long x 12'
hioh
Countv Road I Road Timber bridne 60' 10nQ x 7' high
County Road I Trail Cor-Ten Steel Arch Bridge 60' long
County Road H Road Double Concrete Box Culvert 8' hiah x 10' wide each
Interstate 35W Highway Double Concrete Box Culvert 8' high x 10' wide each
U,S, Highway 10 Hiahway Double Concrete Bax Culvert 8' high x 10' wide each
Poppyseed Drive ex!, Road Double Concrete Box Culvert 8' high x 10' wide each
.
VI-55
-------
