.
III. SITE IDENTIFICATION
A. Designation: Rice Creek North Regional Trail Corridor
B. Classification: Regional Trail Corridor (excerpt from Recreation Open
Space Development Guide/Policy Plan adopted by the Metropolitan Council
on November 21, 1985).
1. Function: Regional trail corridors provide opportunities for recreational
level travel between units of the regional system along linear resources
of high quality.
2. Resource and Site Qualifications
a. Regional trail corridors can be located along either natural resource
or man-made features.
b. Regional trail corridors that follow natural resource features should
be of sufficient width to protect such natural features and
accommodate travel modes with minimal disruption of the resource.
. Examples are creeks and rivers, drainageways or tree lines.
c. Regional trail corridors that follow man-made features should be of
sufficient width to accommodate travel modes planned. Examples
are railroad rights-of-way, utility easements, or road rights-of-way.
d. Trailhead facilities should be located within regional parks and park
reserves whenever possible. Additional user support facilities, when
needed, should be accommodated along trail corridors.
3. Location and Distribution
a. Regional trail corridors should be located in or near major population
centers and be readily accessible to metropolitan residents. Location
of specific regional trail corridors depends on their ability to serve
unmet needs for trail activities.
b. Corridors should link regional parks and park reserves.
c. Corridor alignment between regional parks or park reserves should
be determined by the occurrence of natural or man-made features
with suitable characteristics.
d. Corridors should occur where they provide a recreation experience of
high quality within a linear natural resource.
.
II I-I
-------.----
