.
SUMMARY
The existing roadway is in poor condition and has begun to deteriorate more rapidly as a
result of the recent construction traffic in the district. Some rehabilitation work was
performed on the roadway in the early 1990s but this work has served its expected useful life.
The narrow width of the existing roadway creates potentially hazardous situations with left
turning traffic and does not provide for safe passing of disabled vehicles. The roadway
serves a large volume oftmcking traffic and therefore should be upgraded to pavement
system designed for this type and volume of traffic.
The proposed project is feasible and can be constructed, as described and illustrated in the
report. Project costs, as illustrated herein, are reasonable and representative of the proposed
scope of improvements. The project would enhance the safety and the function of the
intersection of West Round Lake Road providing improved access to existing and future
commercial properties in the Gateway Business District. The project will also improve the
marketability of the Gateway Business District by improving the aesthetics of the corridor
where people will access the district.
The city engineer requests that Council provide direction on the roadway alternates and
. enhancements to be incorporated in the project. The city engineer and staff recommend
combining phases 1 and 2 of West Round Lake Road into one bid package but ask for
Council direction on that issue.
.
9
-- --------
