'..
Park Land on Ridllewood Road
Council member Hicks has talked with Tom Mulcahy about the title for the property between .
Old Snelling and Ridgewood Road, Mr, Mulcahy has provided a letter giving his opinion about
what the City should do to proceed with obtaining title to this property, A copy of his letter is
attached,
Renamin/? Lindev's Park
I have only received four suggestions for renaming the park, They are as follows:
* Hick's Park
* Wagon Wheel Park
* Joseph Hackney Park
* Arden Farms Park
The last two suggestions were from the same person who provided the following information, In
1906, State Senator Joseph Hackney started buying land along Hamline A venue and eventually
owned land between Snelling and Hamline Avenues from Cty Rd. C2 to Cty Rd E, It was called
Arden Farms. Because of this, the person submitted the last two names for consideration.
I will have the Parks and Recreation Commission discuss the possibilities at their February or
March meeting. If the Council has name possibilities, please submit them to me within the next
month.
Communitv Education and School Board Meeting
I spoke to the School Board about the use of school facilities at their meeting with the
Community Education Advisory Committee, The local parks and recreation departments are one .
of the largest users of school facilities; however, our programs are being cut because of the lack
of space at the schools. We are no longer able to offer adult sport programs because of the
increase in youth association activities. The School Board has stated that youth programs have a
precedent over adult programs for the use of school facilities, mainly gymnasiums,
Philosophically, I agree with this, but there are many times that youth associations permit for
time later in the evening that they do not use, We could be running adult basketball or volleyball
during this 9:00-10:00 time period,
Park Maintenance
The recent cold weather and snow has kept us busy. They have done their best to keep the trails
cleared in between clearing and flooding the hockey and skating rinks, Julie and Janet continue
to receive many favorable calls from residents who are happy that we are clearing the trails, I
also received a couple of positive comments from older adults at the Town Hall Meeting who
appreciate being able to walk on the trails during the winter.
Recreation Pro/?ram Update
Keith Bateman, a senior at Bethel College, has started to fulfill some internship hours with our
department. We are not paying Keith for the hours he spends in the office, He will be receiving
hands-on experience with supervising ice rinks, programming projects, special event planning
and coordination, event chaperoning, and teaching programs, He will be spending most of his
time with recreation programs, but he will also spend time with the maintenance crew and with .
me, He is working on a "Parents Introduction to Youth Sports" pamphlet which will be
