Monthly Department Head Report May 20, 1998
Public Works .
Two Arden Hills Public Works and one Parks employee are working with Shore view on storm
clean-up this week. The City of Arden Hills is providing their two largest dump trucks and a
front-end loader to clear debris. The City of Arden Hills escaped thc storm with only minor tree
damage and some power outages. The Lift Station on Thom Drive was without power from
Friday afternoon until Tuesday morning. Public Works employees set up the City's large
generator early Saturday to power this Lift Station and no problems occurred.
The alarm system for this station failed, but the lack of power was noticed by the on-call person
doing a routine weekend check of the stations.
Public Works employees removed one of the two pumps at the Presbyterian Homes Lift Station
on May 19,1998 and brought it in for repair. Every Lift Station has two pumps but Public
Works employees are holding their breath anytime one pump is down. The pump should be back
in service by Friday, May 22, 1998.
Blacktop patching was well under way and will resume when we are back to full strength. With
vacations and sick leave, Public Works had as few as three people at times this month.
Street crack sealing will start the first week of June and run for two weeks as it has the past two
years. Previous sealing was inspected by the Public Works Director with the sealant company .
representative, and some application techniques were discussed to assure a better job. The
Director has noticed about 1 % of the sealant has come loose and asked the supplier for an
explanation. Overall, the crack sealing is holding up well and doing the job.
The Industrial/Commercial Water Meter Factory representations were here for two days this
month and set up the computer software to download the radio meter reader and process the
information for automatic billing. Representatives also spent time with Public Works employees
doing hands-on meter reading, route set-up and other functions of the radio reader. A lot of
information was learned.
The last C/I meter has been delivered and will be installed on the Bethel College water main this
summer. The 10" meter and fittings is about 7' long and weighs about 2,000 Ibs. The Director
estimates it will take about two days to install. Water to Bethel will not need to be shut down,
however, as a meter by-pass line exists.
The City Engineer and Public Works Director will begin walking City drainage ditches this week
to evaluate ditch conditions. It is the Director's intent to start a ditch cleaning program this year
with actual cleaning to begin in 1999.
Most of the Sanitary Sewer Televising work for 1998 has been completed. Some areas along the
east side of Lake Johanna are so infested with tree roots, the television cameras couldn't get
through. Public Works employees will have to use root cutting equipment and clean the lines .
before televising work can be completed. Most of these areas are in easements where restoration
will be a big problem.
