ARDEN HILLS PLA1\TNING COMMISSION - MAY 6.1998 7
. Chair Erickson inquired if this was a flashing sign or a decorative non-flashing sign.
Tom Bye, Sign-A-Rama, representing the Holiday Inn/McGuire's, 1201 West County Road
E, stated that the neon sign would not flash and the color would be complimentary to the color of
the building.
Commissioner Sand asked Mr. Ringwald if the new canvas awnings were already in place. Mr.
Ringwald stated they were removed while the building was being repainted and will be
reinstalled. The neon strips will be located above the awning.
Commissioner Sand inquired about the colors of the neon sign. Tom Bye stated the color of the
sign would be either pink or teal.
Sand moved, seconded by Nelson to recommend approval of Planning Case #98-15,
Special Use Pennit (signage), 1201 West County Road E, Holiday Inn/McGuire's,
subject to compliance with the plans in Exhibit A of the Staff memorandum, dated May
6, 1998, and with the understanding the color of the neon sign may change to a color
other than what is noted on the attachment, which is pink. The motion carried
unanimously (7-0).
Chair Erickson clarified that the approval of the Planning Case was with the understanding that
the color of the new signage may change from what is shown on the attachment.
. CASE #98-12 - CITY OF ARDEN HILLS - ZONING ORDINANCE MODIFICATIONS
(RV PARKING & BILLBOARDS) - PUBLIC HEARING
Chair Erickson requested verification of the public hearing notice. Community Development
Director Kevin Ringwald verified notice of public hearing in the Bulletin on April 22, 1998.
Chair Erickson gave an overview of the public hearing process, then opened the public hearing at
8:44 pm.
Mr. Ringwald explained the City of Arden Hills requests approval of two amendments to the
Zoning Ordinance. The first amendment would modify the length of time certain Recreational
Vehicles can be parked in a driveway from 90 to 10 days. The second amendment would allow
existing billboards in the Gateway Business District (GBD) to be modified, with City approval as
long as the total number of billboards or billboard faces are reduced.
Mr. Ringwald stated that previously, the City Council requested Staff to review the length of
time certain recreational vehicles may be parked in a driveway. This study was in response to a
concern by the City Council that the regulation allowed for recreational vehicles to park in a
driveway for 90 days and then the applicant can receive a renewal for another 90 days. Thereby,
certain recreational vehicles (ie., watercraft, snowmobiles, ATV's) can remain on a driveway for
180 days, while all other Recreational Vehicles are limited to 7 days with a renewal of an
. additional 7 days.
----------------------
