" ..
CITY OF ARDEN HILLS
. MEMORANDUM
DATE: July 22,1998
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Cindy S. Walsh, Community Development Director ~
SUBJECT: July Department Head Report
Vandalism at the Parks
We continue to have numerous cases of graffiti and other vandalism in our park areas. This year
has been worse than previous years. We have had spray paint, trash can fires, picnic tables
demolished, port-a-potty damage, base boxes destroyed, people driving on the ball fields, and
other miscellaneous instances. I have been working with the Ramsey County Sheriff in an
attempt to catch some of the people who are damaging our park areas. However, they have not
been successful in catching anyone.
Park Maintenance
* The staff hope to have the play structure at Cummings Park finished by the first week in
August. They are finishing the border and plan to have the surface material delivered next
. week.
* Additional signs have been placed along the trail areas to remind pet owners of their
responsibility to clean up after their pets. This seems to be more of a problem on and around
the unpaved trails, specifically in the Chatham area.
* With the Little League and Girls Fastpitch seasons coming to a close, the maintenance staff
have been making improvements to the fields. We have a 2-3 week period to make
improvements and repairs before the Fall soccer and softball season begins.
Associate Planner
Nancy Randall will begin her employment with the City of Arden Hills on Monday, July 27.
She plans to attend the Council meeting that evening.
. Ramsey County Joint Soccer Facilities
I will be meeting with Greg Mack from Ramsey County on July 31 to discuss some potential
opportunities for a multi-field soccer complex. I will keep you posted as our discussions
progress.
Dan Vall~han Property
I have met with Dan Vaughan to discuss the possibility of exchanging a park area east of
Parkshore Drive for property along the south and east side of Round Lake. The intent is to
obtain City property along Round Lake that is 15 feet wide for the construction of a trail. Mr.
Vaughan is interested in this proposal. I will calculate the difference in square feet between what
. we currently own and what I am proposing. Mr. Vaughan is gone for the next several weeks, so
further conversations will not proceed for awhile.
