Monthly Department Head Report Page 2
Good news from American Testing is, there are only minor amounts of asbestos in the old City .
Hall, not enough to warrant any special treatment. American Testing indicates the entire
building can be demolished and disposed of at a landfill. A written report to the City will follow.
Public Works employees have done a large amount of blacktop patching this month and replaced
several street signs damaged by accidents.
In the Sewer Department, power outages on July 15th, caused five lift stations and the booster
station to go into alarm. Fortunately those lift stations are some of the least active and the
backup generator was readied but not needed before power was restored.
Three more storm sewer catch basins were reconstructed due to failures and at least one more
needs replacing this year.
In the Water Department, the last Commercial! Industrial Meter servicing Bethel College
was installed this month. This completes this project and final costs for the project are
anticipated to be approximately $35,000 less than the original estimate which based everything
on a worst case scenario.
The Public Works Foreman and one other member of the crew, attended a hazardous waste
seminar conducted by Ramsey County. This deals with proper disposal of drain oil, solvents,
batteries, and those type of materials. The City does have a program in place for this. .
The City received its new air compressor this month and has taken the old one to thc State
Surplus Auction which will be held on July 25th. Specifications for the new emergency back up
generator should be finished next week.
Notices of the Publie Hearing regarding surface water use have been post cd near the Lake
Josephine boat landing and notices to residents and the paper are ready to mail.
Bethel College has informed Public Works that they have completed a study on the Hamline
Avenue odor problem and they will be installing a chemical applicator to correet the problem.
. This applicator should be in and running sometime this fall. Craig Hjelle, Bethel Facility
Director, stated the college will install and maintain the applicator at their cost.
Public Works has received a check for 55000 from the Met Council for this years inflow and
infiltration (1&1) study which is under way. This was part of a matching grant where the City
must spend at least 510,000 on 1&1 identification to be eligible for the grant. As part of this
years study, a significant amount of pipe failures are being identified for future repair.
Fred Reed, Public Works Maintenance, is reeovering well from his triple by-pass surgery but is
not expeeted to return to work until September or October of this year.
.
