-----
Monthly Department Head Report Page 2 -
Public Works
Public Works employees disconnected the sewer and water service lines to the old City Hall. Gas .
and electric have also been disconnected.
More manhole repairs were made when a sink hole was discovered on Hamline Avenue and
Tiller Lane where one side of a manhole collapsed. Attached is a picture of this one showing a
portion of the manhole missing around two pipe and the resulting sink hole.
In that same area the Public Works crew is cleaning out a ditch along Hamline which is causing
back ups in some areas. This is a relatively simple ditch to clean as it can be accessed from the
roadway.
The lift station just below the east side of Perry Park has been painted with graffiti so often by
vandals that Public Works decided to paint it tan, rather than power washing the structure with
chemicals each time. This will allow Public Works to paint only over graffiti areas with
matching tan paint.
Several sewer manhole covers which snow plows have hit, as a result of settlement of the
roadway around the covers, have been dug up and lowered. Even though most of the City's
plows are designed to trip when an obstacle is hit, it still can be a serious jolt to the driver and
equipment.
Clearing of another sewer easement, this one east of Hudson Road has been completed. It is a
Public Works goal to get all the sewer easements cleared to provide easy access to sewer lines. .
Infratech has started on the repair work of those areas identified for repair during the 1996 sewer
televising. BRW is monitoring this work.
Several fire hydrants with known problems were repaired, grass cutting on boulevards, and some
tree trimming has been done as time allowed.
Public Works Director
Some of the projects the Public Works Director has been working on include:
. Gateway inspection (utilities & quantities)
. Drainage ditch evaluation
. Lift Station #3 conversion
. NSP rates on water pumping
. Finalizing specifications for a new back up generator
. 1998 & 1999 Street Improvements
Fred Reed continues to recover from his triple by-pass surgery and has indicated he expects to
return to work on September 21,1998.
.
-----
