Mr. Brian Fritsinger
November 4, 1998 .
Page 2
Alternative D Description
This alternative includes the reconstruction of West Round Lake Road into a 44 foot wide
roadway with concrete curb and gutter along its entire length. The proposed right of way
width for this alternative is 60 feet with an additional 15 feet of permanent trail and utility
easement dedication along the eastern side. The roadway would be constructed over the
existing roadway however the eastern curb line would be approximately 6 meters (20
feet) east of the current edge of pavement. The roadway would not include a median but
would be striped to provide for a 4.2 meter (14 ft) wide southbound lane, 4.2 meter (14 ft)
wide northbound lane and 4.8 meter (16 ft) wide center turn lane which would be used by
southbound traffic entering the businesses. A six foot concrete walk is also proposed as
a part of this alternative to provide for the pedestrian connection between transit on
Highway 96 and the businesses. The concrete walk would be constructed completely
within the trail and utility easement. Alternative D is illustrated in the attached figure.
This road section would provide adequate overall traffic capacity with the one through
lane in each direction while providing maximum left turning capacity via the center lane.
The additional left turning capacity of the center lane may prove especially effective at
shift change periods where numerous vehicles are entering a single business. The e
relatively high volume of truck traffic anticipated on this roadway would be better served
by a three lane roadway allowing wider turning radii for trucks and additional stacking
room for left turns. The roadway would need to be constructed in halves or thirds to
facilitate access to existing businesses during construction. Some temporary widening of
the existing roadway would be necessary to accommodate construction. Moderate
reconstruction of driveway entrances to the existing properties would be required. This
alternative would require the construction of a moderate amount of retaining walls along
the eastern trail and utility easement due to grade differences between the existing
roadway and the commercial properties. Approximately 0.9 acres of permanent easement
would be required to construct this alternative. ,
.
U:\Wf>OOCSIARDENHIL\ROUNDLAK\FEASADDN.MEM
