David J. Showalter, AICP, AlA
Page 2

Downtown Revitalization

Major downtown revitalization and urban design projects for which Mr,
Showalter was project manager or principal designer include:

. Minneapolis Upper Mississippi River Master Plan, a 3% mile riverfront
revitalization plan analyzing land use, transportation, recreational and
environmental opportunities.
. Humboldt Greenway in Minneapolis, a neighborhood revitalization
process reversing declining property values by combining open space
investment, public infrastructure improvements and housing
redevelopment programs.
. Ames, lA, Downtown Development Plan, a plan to help define and
strengthen downtown's future role in the region and prepare for future
revitalization and development.
· Jackson, MS, Urban Design Plan, a study recommending an intensified
downtown core, an emphasis on mixed-use development, combined
public/private initiatives, and an implementation program for short and
long term time horizons,
. Riverfront Civic Center Urban Design Plan in Mankato, MN,
planning and design for the revitalization of the city's commercial core
and the construction of public space improvements and a civic center.

He was responsible for similar downtown development plans and
improvements in historic Stillwater, MN, and Fort Myers, FL -- both
responsibilities included the creation of riverfront recreation and interpretive
pedestrian trail systems. David has also completed studies guiding
public/private improvements, with emphasis on pedestrian circulation, for
Minneapolis' Historic Mills District and downtown Sioux Falls, SD.

Mr. Showalter has also completed several special area planning and urban
design studies for siting major institutional land uses and college campus
master plans for educational and institutional clients.

Land Use and Community
Impacts

Mr, Showalter is experienced in land use planning and community impact
analysis for both special district plans and for integral components of
community-wide transportation plans. As both an architect and city planner,
he brings an understanding of the connection between transportation projects
and surrounding land uses, the implications of land use change, and ultimately
the physical effect to the social, and economic aspects of a community,

Recent Publications

"Revitalizing Neighborhoods through Greenway Planning", Planning

Minnesota, Minnesota Chapter APA, March 1998.

.22183-TR.doc - (1/99)

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

..
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

.-
.
.
.
