The area code
for Minneapolis will remain 612.
But for cities bordering either
394 or the city of Minneapolis, the
dividing line isn't quite as clear cut.
The Minnesota Public utilities
Commission divided the area code
split along community boundaries so
that all residents in a given commu-
nity have a common area code.
While mandatory dialing doesn't
begin until Jan. 14, it is a good idea
to start preparing now. Programmed
phone numbers on cell phones or &x
machines won't work on Jan. 14 unless
they have the new area code designa-
tion. Dial-up modems and other
eqnipment will also need to reflect the
new to-digit numbers if they connect
to numbers outside you new area code.
It's also important to remember
that even though you will now need to
use the area code to make a call across
the new boundaries, a local call still
remains a local call. You do not need
to dial a ''1'' in front of the number
within the Twin Cities and you will
not be charged a long-distance fee for
a local call. If you have questions
regarding your area code designation,
Qwest has a hotline number to call at
(800) 441-5516 or visit: www.uswest.
com/areacodes/minnesota.html. k

November 22, 2000

Page 13
