.

.

.

~;fLt J~

6.0 Traffic Forecasts

This section describes the process for generating the traffic forecasts for the key
intersections based on the proposed site development. The traffic forecast process
consisted of the following key components:

Existing traffic volumes
Background traffic growth
Amount of site generated traffic
Distribution of site generated traffic

The existing traffic volumes were obtained as part of the existing condition process.
Traffic forecasts were developed for the Year 2002. The purpose of the Year 2002 is to
indicate expected traffic volumes with a complete build-out of the proposed development
site.

6.1 Background Traffic Forecasts

The first step of the traffic forecasting process was to determine the expected background
growth in traffic. Traffic growth in the vicinity of the proposed development will occur
between existing and Year 2002 conditions due to other growth and development in the
region. This growth is typically termed as "background growth" and must be accounted
for as part of the forecast volumes. The growth rate was assumed to be 2% per year.

The ambient growth rate was applied to the existing traffic volumes to obtain the
expected Year 2002 background traffic.

6.2 Traffic Generation

In order to estimate the traffic impacts of the proposed development, it is necessary to
estimate the amount of traffic that will be generated_ The planned land use for this site is
Walgreen's, a pharmacy/drugstore with a drive-through window.

6.2,1 Trip Generation

The trip generation was estimated using the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE)
Trip Generation Manual. (Sixth Edition. 1997). This reference documents daily and peak
hour trip generation based on the type and intensity of a wide variety of land uses.

The proposed development is expected to generate approximately 39 vehicle trips during
the a.m. peak hour and approximately ]54 vehicle trips during the p.m. peak hour. The
specific trip generation values are presented in Table 6.2.1- ]

Walgreen's Traffic Impact Study
Draft Report

Traffic Forecasts
F ebT7Jflry 07, 2001

6-1
