Commissioner
Sand asked if they wanted to follow the City of Minneapolis, or did they want to follow a
City more like Arden Hills.

Commissioner Sand stated he wanted to see more uniformity of signage. He stated he did
not believe they had not improved the sign Ordinance. He did not understand why all of
the districts were created. He did not agree with the height requirements. He stated he
wanted to postpone this issue so they had the opportunity to review this. He asked if they
had reviewed other Cities like Arden Hills. Mr. Cronin stated they had compared it to
Shoreview. With respect to the districts, he believed different areas ofthe City reflected
a different feel.

Cornmissioner Galatowitsch stated she agreed on having signs off of the ground in the
County Road E area due to visibility issues.

Cornmissioner Sand expressed concern about the signs being allowed to be higher in the
air. He stated he would agree to 20 feet, but anything more above that did not serve a
purpose. He stated 28 feet was too high. Mr. Cronin stated ifthat was done, the area of
the sign should also be reduced.

Commissioner Erickson stated he did not know why any business would want have their
sign 28 feet in the air, except to be seen from a far distance.

Commissioner Sand asked how much would the sign area need to be reduced. Mr.
Cronin replied 60 feet.

Commissioner Sand stated he would feel more comfortable with this.

Commissioner Sand asked ifthey could control the sign height along Interstate 694. Mr.
Cronin replied the City could control the sign height.

Commissioner Erickson moved, seconded by Commissioner Zimmerman, to recommend
adopting Case #01-23 and setting a public hearing on the amendment for the Commission
meeting on October 3,2001.

Commissioner Sand stated his opinions were not intended to be an insult to all of the hard
work that had been prepared and thanked the Committee for all of their work.

The motion carried unanimously (5-0).

NEW BUSINESS

None.

OLD BUSINESS

None.
