.

.

.

~

~
EN HILLS

MEMORANDUM

DATE: February 7, 2002

TO: Joe Lynch, City Administrator
FROM: Aaron Parrish, City Planner fif

SUBJECT: Digital Camera

As you are aware, the City's existing digital camera is only compatible with computers that run
on the Windows 95 or 98 operating system, Since we are now fully networked, we do not utilize
this operating system. In the past, the digital camera has been used by the Building Official and
Inspector to document code enforcement violations, by the Park and Recreation staff to
photograph various programming activities to be included in brochures etc. . . , by Public Works
staff to document sewer and water breaks, and by the City Planner for Planning Cases and
special projects.

After some checking and comparative shopping, I have identified the Canon PowerShot G2 as a
digital camera that would meet our needs. This camera will take high quality pictures, has a lot
of memory, uses a rechargeable battery, is compatible with our current computers, and comes
with excellent photo editing software. Most importantly, the camera features a 3.6X zoom lens
necessary for documenting code enforcement violations.

The camera costs approximately $750 to $900 depending on the payment method used to
purchase the product. This expense was not included in the 2002 capital budget. However, we
did not fully expend the revenues allocated to purchase laser printers. More specifically, $7500
was allocated for the purchase of 3 three replacement laser printers, and only $5469 was spent.
This represents a difference of $2031. In short, this expense would not have any adverse
budgetary impacts. Please feel free to contact me if you should have any questions.
