e

.

e

"

"

~
~~HILLS

MEMORANDUM

TO: Joe Lynch, City Administrator

FROM; Thomas J. Moore, Parks & Recreation Director and Acting Public Works Director

SUBJECT: Public Works Purchase of a Replacement I Ton Truck

DATE: February 21, 2002

Backl!round
The Arden Hills Public Works Department is currently on an eight-year replacement cycle for
the City's smaller vehicles, which are used daily. The Public Works Department currently has
two, I ton dumplplow trucks. Stafflast year recommended to Council to replace one of those
trucks in 2001 and the other in 2002. The vehicle currently scheduled for replacement in the
2002 Public Works Equipment CIP is a 1993 Ford I Ton Truck,vehicle #106, with 41,345 miles.

Uses
The I ton trucks plow and sand as the larger trucks do, but generally take on the shorter,
narrower areas and cul-de-sacs where maneuverability is a factor. In the summer the one tons
are used for blacktop patching, as they are lower and easier to shovel from. Other uses are
hauling brush and debris, pulling trailer equipment, plus general hauling and transportation.
These are the most versatile trucks in the City's fleet.

Minnesota Cooperative Purchasinl! Venture (CPV)

The City of Arden Hills currently pays $350 annually to maintain membership in the Minnesota
Cooperative Purchasing Venture Program. This allows the City to participate in State
specifications and bid prices, resulting in the City of Arden Hills paying the same amount for a
single piece of equipment as the State does for numerous pieces. The discount is such that a City
buying a new piece of equipment through the CPV will typically pay less than buying a slightly
used piece of equipment, which was not purchased through the CPV.

Superior Ford, is the vendor that has the State contract for Ford vehicles. Their Minnesota State
contract number for light trucks is 0877C 1.
