Hwy 96
Arden Hills, MN 55112-3923

Dear Joe:

I am writing today about an exciting program called Kids Voting which is being sponsored by
the Roseville Rotary Club,

e

Kids Voting is a non-partisan, grassroots-driven project that educates youth about their role as a
citizen, and encourages kids to get involved in voting by going to the polls on election day with
their parents. Once there, kids cast a ballot similar to the official ballot (the same offices and
candidates, but a slightly different appearance to distinguish it from the official ballot). The
results of their votes are tallied and distributed back to the schools so that they can see the
tangible outcomes of voting.

In major American cities, the mayor is elected by less than 10 percent of those eligible to vote,
In 1998, only an estimated 20 percent of eligible voters between the ages 18 to 24 participated in
elections. Through a special curriculum made available to the school district, and tailored to
each grade level, the il1'i.portarice of being involved and th.e responsibilities of citizens.hip and
voting are conveyed to our young people prior to them reaching voting age, In addition, the role
of family participation and community involvement are key to the success of a project such as
this!

This program will serve students in the Roseville Area School District, and encompass the cities
of Roseville, Falcon Heights, Lauderdale, Little Canada, Shoreview, Arden Hills, and
Maplewood. Roseville Rotary estimates that the program will cost $1 per student to implement
for the 2002 Fall General Elections. To date, we have raised $2,500 towards this project from
donations of support from the Falcon Heights/Lauderdale Lions Club and the Roseville Rotary
Club.

e

HOME OF THE MINNESOTA STATE FAIR AND THE U OF M ST.
