J~ ~ c...QJL f~
.~ ~ sIn/a;}, I
.

J..-.....

~Co~l

]) RfJPT
4-~~

Transportation Questions and Answers

-c~

In response to a proj ected budget shortfall in 2002-2003, the School Board held a series
of community forums to hear the public's reaction to proposed reductions that currently
total $4.6 million. During those meetings, many citizens expressed that keeping cuts out
of the classroom should remain the highest priority. The community also suggested that
transportation was one area where reductions were possible, and they encouraged the
Board to consider offering a fee-for-service option.

On April 11, the School Board revised the 2002-2003 transportation policy. Following
are the most commonly asked questions and answers related to this decision.

What changes will occur ill bl/sing for ne.xt year?
The Board voted to include a fee for transportation for students residing within two miles
of their school. The District currently provides transportation services that exceed the
minimal state requirements by offering busing for middle and high school students who
live one mile or more from their school, elementary school students who live Y:, mile
from school and kindergarten students who live 1,400 feet from school.

.

What savings are expected?
Total cost savings are not yet available and will be affected by fee-for-service
participation and safety measures. For example, the Board addressed four hazardous
crossing areas by adding more buses to transport affected students at no cost, and directed
the District to create a comprehensive safety plan.

What is the fee for service?
The Board approved a fee-based option for those students who live less than two miles
from school. The fee will be $200 per student with a family cap of $500 per year. Anyone
seeking transportation service within two miles must complete the application form and
submit the appropriate fee for service. The payment and registration deadline is June 14.
Students who will be bused (those living beyond two miles and those that have paid for
bus service) will receive postcards that may be used as a bus pass next school year.
Details concerning the procedure for riding the bus will be explained in future
communications.

Are there opportunities for financial assistance?
Families who qualify for free-and-reduced lunch will receive a fee waiver. Applications
for the free-and-reduced lunch are available on the web site
(www.moundsviewschools.org/foodservice/foodbenefits.asp ). Applications are also
available at your child's school or at the District Food Service Office (651-639-6011).

.

How is the District determining its two-mile boundaries?
