<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />~ <br />~HILLS <br /> <br />MEMORANDUM <br /> <br />DATE: <br /> <br />Agenda Item 9.B <br /> <br />TO: <br /> <br />June 20, 2002 <br /> <br />Mayor and City Council 4 <br />Joe Lynch, City AdministratorOVV <br /> <br />FROM: <br /> <br />SUBJECT: <br /> <br />Mission Statement Review <br /> <br />ENCLOSURE: <br /> <br />2002 Retreat Work <br />Copies of mission statements <br />Policy governance model information <br /> <br />At the 2002 Council/Staff Retreat there was discussion about the existing mission statement and <br />the need for better understanding ofthe purpose, meaning and use of a mission statement. <br /> <br />Council indicated a desire to continue exploring the current Mission Statement, review other <br />examples and understand staffs desire to possibly create a different one. <br /> <br />Council heard from the staff about lack of understanding the Mission Statement and its <br />intentions, lack of knowledge about its existence and inability to incorporate existing statement <br />into their daily work. <br /> <br />Council reviewed the hard work and time that went into establishment of the current Mission <br />Statement, lack of desire to go through similar difficult discussion, and need for revision. <br /> <br />Council directed staffto work further on the Mission Statement and report back. <br /> <br />At this time, staff has collected some mission statements from other cities. That information is <br />enclosed for your review and information. <br /> <br />Staffhas outlined the points from the discussion at the Council/Staff Retreat: <br />A mission statement should: <br />. Be concise <br />. Bein <br />. Be authoritatively generated (from the Council) <br />. Be horizontally and vertically intcgrated (across and between government agencies and <br />within and throughout all departments) <br />. Be understood by an eighth grade civics class <br />
