Moore, Operations & Maintenance Directo;-f~ j. ~

Replacement of Royal Hills Park Play Structure

FROM:

SUBJECT:

Background

The existing play structure at Royal Hills Park was installed in the summer of 1988. The wood
and steel structure shows signs of wear; the wood is in poor condition and the steel is rusting.
The play structure was originally scheduled for replacement in 2002, but due to budget
considerations, was not replaced.

City Staff and members of the Parks, Trails and Recreation Committee have received nwnerous
phone calls from area residents inquiring if the Royal Hills play structure would be replaced this
year. The play structure receives heavy use from the neighborhood.. In addition, because Royal
Hills Park is a T-Ball site, it tends to draw families with young children, who also use the play
structure.

2003 Budget

The 2003 Capital Improvement Plan allocated $ 38,000 for this project.

Parks, Trails and Recreation Committee Recommendation

At its February 25,2003, meeting, the Parks, Trails and Recreation Committee selected the bid
from Miracle Recreation Equipment Company. The total cost for the play structure, including
installation and sales tax, is $37,950.

Staff Recommendation

Staff recommends that the play structure at Royal Hills Park be replaced, and that Miracle
Recreation Equipment Company provide the new play structure and complete installation at a
total cost not to exceed $38,000.
