.

What Is News?

1. A significant, timely or unusual event that affects a large number of
people.

2. Elements of a good story include:

a. It is timely - something happened recently. This is called "spot news" in
the trade.

b. It is about something unique - the central event in the story is very
unusual or has never. happened before.

c. It affects a large audience - the story in some way touches many people.
Ifreaders can't relate to a story, they are unlikely to pay much attention.

d. It has controversy - journalists are drawn to conflict, which heightens the .
drama of a story.

3. News stories should be balanced. That means both sides of a conflict should
be given an opportunity to speak. Because of this, it is important to have
reasonable expectations. Expect to see or hear things from others that will
counter what you have said.

.
