Problem
Karth Lake is a land locked body of water surrounded by residential homes and a city
park on the south end with a total tributary area of approximately 125 acres. Because this
lake is land locked and primarily fed by runoff from the surrounding neighborhoods the
lake has historically experienced significant water level fluctuations. The city has
installed temporary pumping stations on at least 3 occasions between 1984 and most
recently the fall of 2002 at which time the lake level was pumped down about 2 feet in a 3
week time period.

Currently the lake level is approximately the same as when pumping began last fall.

II. Solutions

Potential solutions to the high water level are as follows:
1. Do Nothing

Pros- No Cost
Cons-Does not address the issue

2. Permanent Pumping Station
a. Pump to Sunfish Lake
b. Pump to Valentine Lake

Pros- Pumping as needed (to a predetermined plan) in smaller increments with a
system installed out of sight

R\ARDENHIL\3795 1\37951 005\Karth Lake\CouncilMelllQ7 -14-03.doc
