City Admin. (j)

FROM:

SUBJECT:

Chamber of Commerce Membership

ENCLOSURES:

1. Summary of Discussions with Arden :mlls Joining the Twin Cities
North Chamber of Commerce prepared by Twin Cities North
2. Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce Information Packet

Overview

Over the last few months, staff and the Mayor have been contacted regarding possible
membership in the Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce. In addition, the Mayor, City
Administrator, and I also had the opportunity to have lunch with the Executive Director of the
Chamber back in September. For reference, the Twin Cities North Chamber was recently
formed through the merger of the Southern Anoka County Chamber of Commerce and the New
Brighton~Mounds View Area Chamber of Commerce. The primary communities served include
New Brighton, Mounds View, Fridley, Columbia Heights, and Spring Lake Park. With the
exception of Spring Lake Park, this area is fairly consistent with the boundaries of our current
State Senate District.

Chamber staff has prepared a summary of benefits and issues associated with joining. This is
attached for the Council's review. Currently, the City is a member of the Greater St. Paul Area
Chamber of Commerce. The annual expense for this membership is approximately $500. Up to
this point, for various reasons we have not been active in the Greater St. Paul Chamber.
Membership dues for Twin Cilies North would be approximately $345.

Requested Action

. I. Provided for discussion and/or direction.

\\Earth\Planning\Misc Files\Economic Development\12-9-03 Memo to Council - Chamber ofCommerce.doc
