<br />e <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />~ <br />~HILLS <br /> <br />MEMORANDUM <br /> <br />DATE: <br /> <br />Agenda Item 2.A <br /> <br />December l4, 2003 <br /> <br />TO: Mayor and City Council <br /> <br /> <br />FROM: Michelle Wolfe, City Administrator ~ <br /> <br /> <br />SUBJECT: Work Session: Law Enforcement Presentation by Ramsey County Sheriffs <br /> <br />Department <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />Arden Hills has been presented a proposal from the City of New Brighton for law enforcement <br />services. An overview of the proposal was presented at a joint meeting of the Arden Hills and <br />New Brighton City Councils in late 2003. The eurrent provider of law enforcement services is <br />the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department. The County provides these services on a contract <br />basis to seven Ramsey County communities. <br /> <br />The proposal from the City of New Brighton proposes a start date of January 1, 2005. The <br />current agreement with Ramsey County requires that nine month notice be given if a City intends <br />to terminate the agreement at the end of a calendar year. Sheriff Fletcher has offered that we <br />could mutually agree to extend that deadline by 30 days if it would ensure the appropriate <br />amount of review, analysis, and public input. <br /> <br />DISCUSSION <br /> <br />Ramsey County Sheriffs Department has been invited to make a presentation to you at the <br />January 20 work session. They will provide Power Point presentation and will have copies of <br />the presentation available for you that evening. The contract cities have discussed this matter <br />and the potential impact to the group if Arden Hills were to leave. A letter from the contract <br />cities group is enclosed in this packet. They will have one or two representatives at the meeting <br />to answer questions. <br /> <br />I am including with this agenda packet the following items as background material for the <br />presentation: <br />.
