I
believe this memo will answer those questions.

Siting:

When this hall was originally conceptualized prior to 1999, it was anticipated that it
would be used for traditional freshmen students and located at freshmen hill on the south
side of the college academic complex. Subsequent to that planning effort it was
determined that a hall for sophomore students would better serve the student community
and therefore a new location needed to be chosen_ After reviewing numerous siting
options that had been generated by our architects and discussing the issue with our
Biology and Environmental Sciences Department the current site was selected.

-

The current location has two distinct advantagcs over the earlier site. First, it provides a
location separate from "freshmen hill"_ This may not seem significant for most ofus but
it is not a small matter in the eyes of a sophomore studenL Secondly, it provides a place
of identity for the sophomore class much in the same way that Heritage Hall provides an
identity for our senior class. Additionally, the site maintains the sensitivity to density
issues while maintaining the vistas throughout the campus. Please see the attached
statemenL

Parking and Traffic:

As stated in the Associate Planner's Report datcd January 5, 2000 Bethel has taken
several steps to reduce parking and traffic problems.

e
