~..

.

.

.

Sasaki Associates Inc.

September 15,2004
Page 2

will reduce the requirement by 51.8 of caliper inches, since the existing planting
significantly exceeds aU benchmark requirem.erHs. Based on the University survey of the
site, the full area defined as the scope of wotk represents a total of 2660" calipers
preserved, with each uee having a minimum caliper of 5". It should be nored that this
calculation does not represent the significant forested area to the north and west of the site.
The existing sire is heavily foresred with large trees.

Second, we propose to introduce 2" caliper trees for overstorey conditions in lieu of some
of the 3" and 4'1 caliper trees. The preserved trees will provide instant shade on site,
alleviating the need for large caliper trees. Smaller trees on the west side in particular and
their root systems will adapt to the site better with the slope condition. The smaller (feeS
will also have a better rate of survival than the larger caliper ttees. Smaller trees in the
wetlands will be fast-growing by the nature of their environment.

When completed, the University Residence Hall will provide students a fairly secluded and
extremely wooded environment. The site has instant shade rhat will only be enhanced
through the proposed landscape plan. Reducing the density of the planted landscape will
allow the site to provide an open recreation area for the students living in the Residence
Hall. With the proposed revisions ro the planting approach, the University will continue
to maintain the history of a campus that values the beauty of its natural assets.

Attached to this letter is the landscape plan that was presented to Council in March, a
revised plan that illustrates our proposal described within this letter, site photos that
illustrate the existing site conditions now that the site is under construction, and a plan
thar identifies the location of the photos.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding this proposal.

Sincerely,

~~

David L Damon, AlA
Senior Associate

Enclosure

xc: City Council
Kunkel, Brusman, Carlsen, Zhang, file 2.6

dd \g: \ 14540.02\2.0 co crespo ndence \2.6 regagency\l- he liege r~-cali JleIs.doc
