.

.

.

~
'1'\.~ HILLS

MEMORANDUM

DATE:

December 15,2004

Agenda Item 2.G.

TO:

Honorable Mayor and City Council

FROM:

Murtuza Siddiqui, Finance DircctorlTreasurer iv).s

SUBJECT: Sound Enhancements - Council Chambers

BACKGROUND:
Last summer, the city upgraded the sound system in the Council Chambers by installing two front
and two rear speakers to improve the quality of sound in the Chambers. The system has proven to
be effective and has accomplished the purpose of carrying the sound to the back of the Chambers so
that the audience can clearly hear the discussion taking place in the front of the Chambers.

Tbe current system works well only when Council member and staff are speaking from their
standard designated seating positions. When tables are arranged in the middle of the Chambers for
the Work Session or another meeting, there is currently no capability to transmit sound through the
existing audio system as there are no microphones. It has been pointed out that whcn the Chamber
fills up with people or goes beyond the second row of seating, the discussion is not heard clearly in
the back.

DISCUSSION:
In order to address the concern outlined above, staff is presenting two options, which were
provided by our Cable Technician and they arc listed below:

I. No cost option - the City has one cordless microphone and one wireless lapel
microphone, These microphones would have to be passed around the table as
individuals speak. We have tested thcse microphones in the room by placing
them in the middle of the table to determine if they are within a pick-up range, It
does not work as these types of microphones have a limited range of about onc
foot from the source.

2. Cost option - in order to transmit sound through our existing sound systcm, we
have to purchase "boundry" microphones which arc designed to be placed in
centcr and it has the capability to pick up sound from all sides of the microphone,
These microphones would have to be plugged into a wall panel and unplugged
