<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />ARDEN HILLS CITY COUNCIL WORKSESSION MINUTES <br />APRlL 18, 2005 <br /> <br />3 <br /> <br />Councilmember Larson asked if the school district would be interested in reopening Snail Lake <br />and Pike Lake Elementary Schools if the need exists in the future, <br /> <br />Superintendent Witthuhn stated that this is an option, The school district is aware of the TCAAP <br />project and the potential need for additional schools in the future. <br /> <br />Mayor Applikowski said that she received an e-mail from a Mounds View High School student <br />regarding the parking situation at St. John's Catholic Church (New Brighton). The student is <br />concerned about safety issues. <br /> <br />Superintendent Witthuhn said that it is the student's choice where he/she parks. The school <br />district provides busing to all students. <br /> <br />Councilmember Grant asked about the State of Minnesota's proposal to encwnber land III <br />Shoreview. Is this bill still being considered by the State legislature? <br /> <br />Superintendent Witthuhn stated that she testified against the bill in the House of Representatives, <br />At this time, there is no companion bill in the Senate, <br /> <br />Councilmember Grant asked if the artificial turf is scheduled to be installed at Irondale High <br />School. <br /> <br />Members of the school board said that the installation is scheduled to begin in May. <br /> <br />Councilmember Larson asked ifracism concerns have been addressed at the two high schools, <br /> <br />Superintendent Witthuhn noted that the State of Minnesota is requiring the Mounds View School <br />District work with the Columbia Heights School District regarding diversity issues. Overall this <br />year has been much better regarding racial issues at the two high schools, <br /> <br />Members of the school board stated that they would welcome input from local governments and <br />would like to explore different ways in which the two entities could work together in the future <br />to discover mutual and financial benefits. <br /> <br />Hil!hwav 96 Landscapinl! Proposal <br />City Engineer Greg Brown provided thc City Council with an overview of the Highway 96 <br />landscaping improvement options that werc originally presented at the Novembcr 15, 2004 work <br />session meeting. Kathy Ryan (URS) reviewed the revised landscaping plan and cost estimates <br />with the City Council. The proposed plan includes boulevard trees and median planting beds of <br />Green Ash, White Ash, Red Oak, and Swamp Whitc oak trees in altemating groupings of three <br />and four. The groupings would altemate from north to south with a continuous rhythm along the <br />Highway 96 corridor. <br /> <br />3 <br />
