Work Jointlv with the Haulers and Their Representatives to Address the
Wear and Tear Issues
Pros:

.

Cons:

Do Nothin!!

Pros:

.

.

Places the responsibility on the haulers and their representatives to offer options
as to what they can do to save the wear and tcar on the streets.
Gives the City the opportunity to negotiate rates, and mandate the routing, the
type of hauling, the size of the trucks, number of axles - (3 axles), reduction in
axle weight, making sure that trucks come in to the City empty, etc.
Has little or no increase in the current workload of City employees.
Retains the competitive aspect ofthc hauling business.
Enables the residents to choose whatever licensed hauler they prefer.
Ask the haulers to accept all refuse.
Work with the haulers to structure rates to tie to inflation.
Require garbage trucks to have an onboard weight recorder so that it can be
enforced.
Only licensed haulers who fit the requirements of the City can serve the
community.

.

If a particular refuse hauler does not have the right equipment/truck, they will not
be able to serve the City due to non-licensure.
If the requirement is to modify the existing equipment, they may raise the fees in
the future to recoup their costs.
Who would realistically police the haulers for compliance with the terms of the
agreement?

.

Residents may not want any changes - why go through the effort?
Any alternative accepted will require holding meetings to educate the residents
and be prepared to defend the position.
Will require further research and must determine ifthe residents do indeed want a
change. This will require surveying and tabulating the results.
Allow the residents to make their own choices.

Page 5
