Based on a preliminmy review of their wall and monument sign
proposal, no special permits will be needed becausc the new signagc will not exceed the sign area or
dimensions of the old signage (a regular sign permit will still be required for eacb sign that is visible
ti.om the public right-ot~way or neighboring properties). However, Boston Scientific is considering
changing the dimcnsions and possibly the color ofthe signagc on thcir water tower.

Discussion

In October 200 I, the City approved a sign variance lor Guidant to put their company name/logo on
the water tower at their campus (PC# 01-25). According to the documents fi'om that approval, it
appears that the proposed dimensions for the <'<'Guidant" name was 2 feet by 31.5 feet, and the name
would appear in thosc dimensions on the east and west sides ofthc water tower. When Planning
Case 01-25 was approved for the water tower signage, the following two conditions were included:
I. The color of the letters on thc water tower being painted black, and the towcr being non-
illuminated.
2. The exterior appearance of the water towcr being maintained.

If thc new signage lor thc water tower is deemed signilicantly different from the signage approved in
PC!! 01-25, a new site plan review lor thc signage may be required. Staff is requcsting the City
Council to review the Boston Scientific proposal and determine if a new site plan review is required
or if the new signage is within the Spilit of the previously approved sign variance.

Should Boston Scientific decide to submit a sign proposal that docs not exceed the area and
dimensions of the existing water tower signage and meets the conditions of Planning Case 01-25, the
Sign Code would only require a sign permit lor replacing thc sign copy.

The Planning Commission informally reviewed the proposal fi.om Boston Scientific and eame to a

City of Arden Hills
CiO' Counei/lvleetingjor September 6. ]006

\\;\1elro-inel_lIs\ardenllillsIPlannillg\Planning CommiSSlon\Nc\v-Old Business'2006\090706 - BosScie water tower signage.doc
