. Mr. & Mrs. Hien T. Ngo
6 West Plcasant Lakc Road
North Oaks, Minnesota 55127
(651) 481-0895
October 19, 2006
Me James Lchnhoff
City Planner
City of Arden Hills
1245 West Highway 96
Arden Hills, Minnesota 55112
Subject: Additional Landscaping Details for 3433 LAKE JOHANNA Blvd.
Dear Mr. LehnhotT:
As we have discussed, an amended landscaping plan for the property is being submitted
as part of the application for the Site Plan Review.
At the October 4th, 2006 mceting, the Planning Commission and you had concerns
regarding our proposed landscaping, related to some trees being too close to the power
. line on the western side of the property, and to the storm sewer line on the northern side.
Also, information about the shoreline landscaping plan was requested.
In addition, I have consulted with some arborists and landscaping experts who
pointed out that the proposed plan did not account for several large existing trees
remaining on or close to the property's northern side and along the shoreline .It also had
problems with overcrowding, which compromises the vegetation's survival and gives a
littering view. Our amended plan submitted today would hopefully satisfactorily address
those issues of concern.
lbe amended proposed plan retains most of the previous plan features: the
retaining walls system, the rain water garden, the varieties of trees, shrubs, flowers, grass
and landscaping materials uscful for erosion control, and run off watcr control in the
long-term. It also has the following amended features:
1) On the western side of the property: three proposed trees are moved closer to
the house and there is an existing tree of black walnut type. The maple and the black
walnut arc large type of trees (60' high, 40' wide), screening almost an 80' span on the
western side. I would propose that the two remaining trees to be planted be mediwn
sized trees such as crab apples (15' high, 15' wide) to avoid overcrowding and contact
with the power line and to give tlowering colors in the spring.
2) On the northern side of the property: there is a large existing hardwood tree at
the property line and a dozen newly planted pine trees on the property to the north. Many
of those pine trees arc within a fcw feet from the property linc. While there is no law
banning tree and shrub planting on the storm sewer easement, 1 would follow the
. recommendation to move the three River Birch trees to about 13' to 15' from the
I
