Arden Hills Council/Staff Retreat 2007
Notes Prepared by Barbara K. Strandell

STAFF: ONE THING THIS YEAR
Department heads were asked to say what one thing, above all else. would they want to
accomplish in the next 12 months. Here are their responses:

Karen: Have MDA negotiated

Michelle - That the community view City staff as having raised the bar: in both performance and
professionarlSm.

Susan: Create a budget document for the City that is useful. And, that we get an award for it.

Schawn: No more recruiting; continuity of staff. Complete the community survey.

Greg Haag: Was absent for this part of the retreat due to a death in his family.

VISION OF ARDEN HILLS
LONG INTO THE FUTURE
Each participant (staff and council members) were asked to write their vision of Arden Hills 20 -30
years from now, on a blank piece of paper (without putting their names on the paper). The idea
was to create an concept of what the City will be like, their ideal. Here are the "visions" submitted:

. Arden Hills is a community where -
o Financially stable
o Safe neighborhoods
o Provide quality services to the residents of AH in the most efficient manner possible

. Arden Hills:
o A unique suburban community with a strong sense of community and place - a
desirable place to live. work. and visit.

. That Arden Hills is viewed as a top City in Minnesota in which to live; something unique,
valuable and preferred.

. Pleasant, green place to live without the worries of funding items that can be found right
next door in other communities. Neighborhood feel. kids riding bikes on road. business
traffic leaves in the evening.

. Would like AH to keep what is good and improve what is not so good:
o Good: rural aspect. neighborhoods. trees & lakes
o Improve: traffic. amenities (coffee shops. retail). more bike traUs & open space

. That Arden Hills has a distinct identity (For more information reference "Identity & Quality of
life" description in Goals section.)

. A community where people live, play, work and socialize.

. Neighborhoods and community:
o Connected
o Safe

2
