OVERVIEW OF NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE E. 11
Identification
Northwestern College is incorporated under the laws of the State of
Minnesota as a College of the Bible, Arts and Sciences, and Professional
Education. It is registered with the Minnesota Higher Education Ser-
vices Office (MHESO).
College History and Background
The College was established as Northwestern Bible and Missionary
Training School at First Baptist Church of Minneapolis on 2 October
1902.
The founder and first president of Northwestern was Dr. William Riley,
pastor of First Baptist Church. From 1902 to 1924, Northwestern class-
rooms and administration functions were housed in the educational
buildings of First Baptist Church. In 1924, Northwestern moved from
the church to Jackson Hall, specifically built to accommodate
both church and school programs.
The institution experienced major growth from 1902-1947. The
Northwestern Theological Seminary was established in 1935,
and the College of Liberal Arts in 1944. Collectively, the Bible
School, Theological Seminary and College of Liberal Arts were
known as "The Northwestern Schools".
In 1948, Northwestern moved to the new Memorial Hall, a large
multi-purpose building across from Loring Park near down-
town Minneapolis. In 1949, President Billy Graham helped
established KTIS radio station as an outreach ministry affiliated
with Northwestern College. In 1951, the Bible School became
a degree -granting institution by adding a fourth year to the
three year curriculum. Degrees granted were: Bachelor of Arts,
Bachelor of Bible and Bachelor of Theology (Seminary).
In 1956, the Seminary and the Bible College closed, and Northwestern
Schools became Northwestern College. In 1970, Northwestern pur-
chased a former Roman Catholic seminary campus in its present loca-
tion. Classes began on the new campus in 1972. Campus buildings
included Nazareth Hall (1921) and Riley Hall (1961).
Enrollment increased dramatically from 209 full time equivalent (FTE)
students in 1972 to 1,547 in 2000 (1630 FTE in Fall 2003). As a result,
several new buildings were added. They include: Moyer Residence
Hall; Hartill / Knutson Residence Halls and Robertson Student Center
(1980); Totino Fine Arts Center (1982); Berntsen Resource Center (1992);
Ericksen Center (1996).
For further historical perspective, refer to the excellent document titled,
'a cloud of witnesses', that was prepared by the college for its 100th Anni-
versary.
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 2.1
