PLANNING ISSUES & ANALYSES III
Campus - Wide Issues
(Note: Interviews of faculty/staff by planning consultant were conducted in Spring 2001
Academic & Policy 1. Waiting lists have developed partially because of the school's limi-
tations to accept more students .
2. It must be stressed that the College look at all issues in context of
the College's Mission and long range institutional plan.
3. Space will limit total student enrollment, and not just in traditional
day programs
4. Space will limit total student enrollment, and not just in traditional
day programs
Facilities & Grounds Related Issues
Facilities 1. Students are receiving a quality education, although there are
already some compromises due to space limitations. Space will
limit total student enrollment. Space will affect course availability,
including both day and evening time periods.
2. Establish an on-going, formal process to deal with future space
needs and space requests.
3. "Squeeze" on class day hours available for maintenance and repair
will further stress access time. Forces repair and replacement to
holiday and summer periods; staff time off at holidays taxes issue;
summer occupancy of dorms also taxes issue.
4. Biggest conflict is one academic need versus another academic
need.
5. Unscheduled spaces are not available for emergencies. (Note: some
institution's policies plan 27o of total space as "down" for remodel-
ings, relocations, emergencies, etc.)
6. Use of Gold Room? Currently, total space is 1,535 ASF which is
large enough for 2 classrooms; either split into two classrooms or
re -furbish for use as small theatre.
7. Need for "Central Store" for bulk purchases, equipment reserves,
dorm replacement items such as appliances, etc. Some standards
propose 1-27o of ASF for a Central Store.
8. Although not a space/ square footage issue (does put square foot-
age pressure due to avoidance of use), non -air conditioned spaces
can be difficult to teach and learn in (especially in Summer School;
also hard to sell to outside groups). Rooms include:
Classroom N458
Gold Room (N222)
Classroom R201 (Continuing Ed)
Nazareth Old Gym (all spaces)
Classrooms R202, R205 and R206)
Nazareth Chapel
Biology Lab N206
Guitar Studio (N388)
Physics Lab N210
Voice Studio N464
Language Lab N416
Piano Studio N466
PC Computer Lab (N117, N119 and N121)
Riley Gymnasium (all)
Youderian Lounge
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS &
SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 3.3
