PLANNING ISSUES & ANALYSES III
Academic Program Space Analysis
A space utilization study was performed in Spring of 2001, and
although various spaces around campus have been reconfigured, the
major space issues still exist. An overview of the report's findings
are outlined below, and if further detail is needed, refer to the space
study document.
Summary
The continued growth at Northwestern College is a time of both
excitement and concern for the College. After just a short time on
campus, it was evident both in interviews and initial observations
that:
There is a high level of dedication and earnestness among staff
and faculty
There are concerted efforts to work within the constraints of the
existing facilities
After further in-depth investigation and data analysis, it was clear
that:
1 Space will affect course availability, including day and evening
time periods
2 Space will limit total student enrollment, and not just in traditional
day programs
3 Students are receiving a quality education, although there are
already some compromises due to space limitations
4 Space limitations include areas that a) need better spatial organiza-
tion to achieve more efficient use of available space, b) exhibit
inappropriate use of specific space type, and c) are simply short of
raw square footage.
True to the College's mission, people are working in a cooperative
effort for the common good of the College. However, at some point,
space need conflicts become overwhelming, and operations become
compromised.
Integrated Perspective
To understand the space utilization issues at Northwestern College,
it must be looked at from a total perspective, integrating academic,
financial and operational needs. The Mission of Northwestern Col-
lege emphasizes the quality of student life.
