PLANNING ISSUES & ANALYSES III
opportunity, and athletic and recreational activity.
To enhance student life on campus, numerous activities and opportu-
nities are offered to the student. Blocks of time must be available on
an organized basis for maximum number of students to participate,
i.e., the co -curricular hours of 3 PM — 5PM.
Approach
Two methods were used to analyze and assess square footage utiliza-
tion on Northwestern College's campus. They include:
1. National norms and industry organization standards
2. Comparative use with other colleges
Two calculation techniques were used to determine square footage
demand. They are based on:
1. Square foot per Weekly Student Contact Hour (WSCH). Factors
include contact hours, type and size of space needed per student in
each specific type of class, and desired use pattern of space.
2. Square foot per student Full Time Equivalent (FTE). Factors
include student population, staff and faculty population, func-
tional categories, and minimum "core" for specific functional cat-
egories.
The "Desired Use Pattern" factors used for analysis on Northwestern
College campus adjusted national standards to fit Northwestern's
specific operations. Operational assumptions include:
7:30 AM — 3:30 PM school day for traditional programs
3:30 — 5:30 PM for Co -curricular programs
° Chapel uses 30 minutes per day plus travel time (55 minutes total)
Qualitative Issues
1 Due to the shortage of classroom and lab space, there is inap-
propriate space use for some classes. Also, in FOCUS/ Pathways
there is a shortage of space, and "substitute" classroom space is
used to meet space demand.
2 Classrooms lag in technological capabilities. Updating with cur-
rent day equipment is necessary to be competitive in today's
market. However, it may be financially advantageous to not wire
laptop classrooms/ labs, and wait 2-3 years until mainstream wire-
less technology is available.
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 3.18
