PLANNING > ISSUES & ANALYSES E III
Lounges
Student Lounge space totals 12,085 on campus proper. (This total
includes Main Dorm Lounges at 10,257 ASF, but excludes off -campus
dorms). This equates to 4.5 percent. Although adequate total square
footage of lounge space is provided, it would be desirable to have a
higher percentage of the total Lounge space distributed in academic
buildings on main campus rather than the largest amount of it in Main
Dorm.
700 Support Space
Within standards
Evening Hours
FOCUS/ Pathways and Personal Enrichment
There is a distinct shortage of classrooms in the evening hours. (Lab
space is not a problem.) The Fall 2001 schedule calls for 33 FOCUS/
Pathways classes to begin at one time, when there are only 27 true
classrooms on campus. If a Masters program is started, space issue
is further aggravated.
Hours of Operation
School day is currently 8 AM — 3 PM. Study was performed on
7:30 AM — 3:30 PM basis. Even with additional hour included in
calculations, campus is still tight for instructional space.
If school day were pushed further into the afternoon, several issues
become more prevalent:
• Less down time for classroom setups and re -arranging for instruc-
tor needs
• Time slots for cleaning and maintenance are becoming shorter
and shorter (evening class hours, Saturday classes, summer dorm
occupancy, etc.)
• Overtime wages for support personnel at odd hours
• Ability to "sell" credit hours at less suitable hours in the day
(student life, student study time, student jobs, faculty availability,
etc.)
Classroom Sizes
Need for 12-15 station size classroom is evident in many academic
programs.
Space Use Recommendations
1 Continue to refine the College's Space Inventory so that a) on-
going space inventory is accurate, b) comparisons with standards
and similar institutions reflect parallel data, and c) resulting
assessments are meaningful.
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 3.21
