III
Space shortage in Labs is affecting quality of education. Example:
Chemistry Lab is typically programmed at 60-80 ASF per student
station. At 70 ASF/station, the chemistry lab should be roughly 1,680
ASF (lab and prep). The current lab consists of 931 ASF. Either the lab
must be remodeled to be bigger, or additional faculty will be needed.
Both Biology and Physics/ Geology Labs have similar constraints.)
300 Offices
Allocation per station is significantly larger than standards
Quantity of offices in short supply
Office location is an issue as to availability for staff versus faculty
400 Library
At calculated capacity (Note: 20 year collection growth projected in
1991)
500 Special Use
Gymnasium
Including Riley Gym, larger than standards for similar size college.
Meets various national standards even if Riley Gym converted to
classroom
Wide variation in standards — size more a matter of institutional
policy
600 General Use
Assembly
Larger than standards for similar size college.
Wide variation in standards — size more a matter of institutional
policy
Size appears necessary to meet college's needs in relation to overall
Mission
Food Service
Food service area calculations indicate a shortage of approximately
1,500 to 2,000 ASF. Kitchen, preparation and serving space are rela-
tively adequate, although the serving area can be tight at times. The
Dining Area is short approximately 1,000 to 1,500 ASF, and is evident
by observation of daily crowding between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM.
Adding to the crowding problem in the Dining area is that Chapel
releases just prior to lunch time. Depending on College desires, poli-
cies and operations, scheduling of Chapel at a time not so close to the
lunch hour would likely relieve some crowding in the Dining area.
This would provide more time to spread out lunch time for diners,
thus reducing peak loads and the need for more space.
Bookstore
Currently, the Bookstore has 1,260 ASF, and for a college of 1,500 FTE,
a bookstore operation would be expected to occupy 1,800 – 2,400 ASF.
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 3.20
