Depending on funding models, teaching methods and faculty
efficiency, enroll the optimum number of students in a class.
Such efforts will require a genuine commitment on the part of
faculty and administration. For this to happen the College should
consider the following steps:
a Review and assess space utilization in the format of the
National Center for Education Statistics manual, Postsecond-
ary Education Facilities Inventory & Classification Manual
(FICM). This allows accurate comparisons with other institu-
tions.
b Adopt policies for and designate shared facilities for general
use (like classrooms), rather than allow departmental "owner-
ship" of such rooms.
c Schedule spaces up to their full potential for each week.
Scheduling of all spaces should be done by a designated col-
lege administrator with the input of faculty. Consideration of
"generic student station", or double -use of student stations in
some labs may be appropriate. Measure such scheduling in
weekly use hours (WRH) and monitor achievement of sched-
uling each school year.
d Consider alternatives to the standard MWF / TTh class sched-
uling sequence.
14 Policy for Providing Building Space:
It is recommended that the College establish an on-going formal
process to deal with future space needs and space requests.
In an atmosphere of tight financial resources it is prudent to
insure that careful evaluation of space needs precedes planning
for expansion. Once program needs are established, the method
of providing space to accommodate program needs is recom-
mended to be followed in the priority order listed below:
a achieve highest utilization of existing space,
b renovate and reallocate existing space(s)
c expand existing building by new construction
15 The College has a significant need for small, informal student
study spaces. The need for such spaces will only increase as the
number of students increases. It is recommended that spaces be
provided for students to study and to expand the opportunities
for social contacts with others. Depending on the specific need
and requirements, the study areas could be separate rooms, or
could be integrated with the corridor system.
Develop a policy for inclusion of study lounge spaces in all new
and remodeled spaces (academic and housing). New buildings
would dedicate 2-57o of the assignable square footage (ASF) for
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS PAGE 5.4
