GLOSSARY 0 A <br />GLOSSARY OF SELECTED TERMS <br />Assignable Square Feet Areas of a building assigned to, or available to, an occupant except <br />(ASF) Custodial Area, Circulation Area, Mechanical Area and Building Struc- <br />tural elements). <br />Normally, all areas supporting instructional efforts, directly or indi- <br />rectly. <br />Building Programming The process, or resulting document, which is a generalized prescription <br />for a proposed facility. Prescriptive elements include: square footage for <br />specific, individual functions/ spaces (as opposed to space utilization <br />planning which is an averaged based square footage projection tool); <br />number of stations; number of users; functions to be performed; tech- <br />nical requirements (mechanical, electrical, lighting, etc.); fixed equip- <br />ment; loose equipment; furnishings required; etc. <br />Building Efficiency The Net Assignable Square Feet (NASF or ASF) divided by the Gross <br />Square Feet (GSF). <br />Capital Development A building program outlining the capital construction projects to be <br />initiated, Program their relative priorities, and the projected costs of <br />each project. A statement of the capital resources required to accom- <br />plish an institution's goals and objectives. <br />Classroom A room used by classes which do not require special-purpose equip- <br />ment for student use. Typically, they are provided with writing sur- <br />faces for lectures. <br />Full Time Equivalent Represents one student carrying what the institution considers to be a <br />full, normal academic credit load. <br />Full Year Equivalent Represents one faculty or staff member working what the institution <br />considers to be a full, calendar year. <br />Generic Classroom/Lab A classroom or lab whose use is not restricted by departmental or pro- <br />gram control.
