GLOSSARY 0 A <br />Room Utilization A numerical value, usually set by institutions, which specifies the <br />expected Standard Weekly Room Use (WRU). <br />Laboratory Space A space designed and/or furnished with specialized equipment to <br />serve the needs of a particular area of study for group instruction in <br />regularly scheduled classes. The design and / or equipment in such <br />room normally precludes its use for other areas of study. (See Room <br />Ownership.) <br />Room "Ownership" Any room, particularly classrooms and laboratories, whose use is <br />restricted by departmental or program control. <br />Section One or more students formally organized for instruction in a specific <br />course under the supervision of an instructor. <br />Space Management The allocation of an institutions facilities resources to the various orga- <br />nizational units, usually though application of detailed planning and <br />programming methodologies. <br />Station The total facilities required to accommodate one person. <br />Station Count The number of stations in a room. <br />Station Utilization Rate The average number of hours per week each station is used: <br />(SUR) <br />SUR = total weekly student hours <br />total number of stations <br />Weekly Faculty One hour spent by one faculty member in contact with a scheduled <br />Contact Hour instructional section. <br />Weekly Student One hour spent by one student in a scheduled instructional section. <br />Contact Hour (WSCH) <br />Weekly Room Use The number of hours a room is used per week for scheduled course <br />(WRU) activities. <br />SOURCE: Higher Education Facilities Planning and Management Technical Report No. 14. <br />NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS APP A.2 <br />
