and adding hours. Larry suggested we start by looking at
the FTE's by academic disciplines. What facilities do we
need right away?
Doug Schroeder asked Larry to share how he would work with
the group, and what he would expect of us to bring back
to the group. Larry will meet with each committee member
individually to discuss space needs. Larry will challenge us
to explain why we need or do not need the space and why
we project what we do for the area in discussion, keeping in
mind the campus as a whole. Support functions will then be
looked at. Larry will put together a plan for discussion. The
Committee will then meet to discuss the plan priorities.
Doug Schroeder asked the Committee for comments and
reactions.
A question regarding the capital campaign and time frame was
raised. It was Mr. Schroeder's belief that Dr. Cureton would
like to see the kick-off in 2004 and work it in parallel with
the LRSP. Is there an interim plan if the College keeps
growing at this pace and our CMP is not in place? Doug
Schroeder addressed that some short-term options have been
considered including renting space off campus or the use of
temporary classroom units. However, student -dining space will
become an increasingly difficult problem to overcome in the
short run.
The question arose again as to whether 2400 would fit on this
campus. Yes, with qualifications. The campus now can only
hold 1600; we are past capacity now and need to do something.
There was a concern mentioned of trying to work on a moving
target. Are we ever going to arrive at the place where we
have met the building need? Doug Schroeder commented that a
new leader is usually brought in to help grow the organization
not to maintain it. It is the responsibility of the President to
work with the Trustees to establish the overall and long-term
growth goals for the organization.
Larry Page mentioned that the Committee would need to test
any changes against the mission of the College. Does the city
of Roseville and Arden Hills know where we are headed? Yes,
Doug Schroeder and Larry Page have met with city officials and
will have further meetings.
Comment was made regarding how educating is changing; that
in 10 years we may not educate like we do now. There
may be more online classes and technology will continue to
bring about significant changes in the education process. Larry
Page mentioned to look at student profile. A question was
raised regarding a graduate school and what total number of
students would we be looking at including Alternative Education
NORTHWESTERN COLLEGE CAMPUS MASTER PLAN PARTNERS & SIRNY ARCHITECTS APP C.21
