Little Lake Johanna (DNR Lake ID number 62-0078 and hydrologic unit code 7010206) is
located in Roseville and Arden Hills. This lake has an area of 18 acres and maximum
depth of 28 feet. The dominate bottom substrate is not known nor is the abundance of
aquatic plants or water quality.
Based on the Gillnet catch only, Carp, Black Bullhead, and Black Crappies were found at
above local median. Brown Bullhead and Northern Pike were sampled at below local
median levels. Yellow Bullhead, Largemouth Bass, Green Sunfish, Pumpkinseed, Bluegill
and hybrid Sunfish are know to inhabit the lake based on 1979 test netting.
The only recorded water level on Little Lake Johanna is 878.28 feet on August 5, 1976.
IV. PROBLEM ASSESS
Current data suggests that Lakes Little Johanna and Johanna have water quality issues.
Both are included in the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency's (MPCAs) March 31, 2004,
proposed Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) list. The listing for Little Lake Johanna was
due to a stress caused by excess nutrients affecting its use for aquatic recreation. The
listing for Lake Johanna was for impacts due to mercury affecting its use for fish
consumption. The Lake Johanna listing is a mainly regional expression, so the initial
approach will be to complete regional or state-wide mercury TMDL reports. This approach
could change based on basin planning activities. U.S. EPA Region 5 understands there
must be a federal responsibility for the national and international air -borne components of
mercury. Both lakes are also included on the MPCA 2006 Impaired Waters List.
This Surface Water Management Plan (SWMP) presents a vision of high quality natural
and water resources for the College as its Master Plan (Figure No. 4) is implemented. The
SWMP's overall goal is to cooperate with the Cities of Roseville and Arden Hills to improve
the quality of both of the campus lakes. Achievement of these goals will deliver good
quality stormwater runoff from the campus to lakes and wetlands at acceptable rates and
volumes, while reducing pollutant and sediment loadings and stream bed/stream bank
erosion and water quality degradation.
The success of attaining these goals will be measured by:
A. Improving the lake grades for Johanna and Little Johanna in cooperation with the
RCWD and the Cities of Roseville and Arden Hills.
Northwestern College Master Plan 6 13529.000
Stormwater Management Study
