Additional Notes
The Planning Commission brought up a couple questions pertaining to shoreland management at
their February 4, 2009, work session. Staff has additional information for follow-up, included
below:
• What are the DNR definitions for the lake classifications, particularly recreational
development lakes (i.e. Round Lake)?
The DNR definitions for lake types are as follows:
-Natural Environment Lakes usually have less than 150 total acres, less than 60 acres per mile of
shoreline, and less than three dwellings per mile of shoreline. They may have some winter kill of
fish; may have shallow, swampy shoreline; and are less than 15 feet deep.
-Recreational Development Lakes usually have between 60 and 225 acres of water per mile of
shoreline, between 3 and 25 dwellings per mile of shoreline, and are more than 15 feet deep.
-General Development Lakes usually have more than 225 acres of water per mile of shoreline
and 25 dwellings per mile of shoreline, and are more than 15 feet deep.
• How are residents able to determine the Ordinary High Water mark for their lake?
Although residents will need to have a surveyor determine where the Ordinary High Water mark
(OHW) falls on their property, the DNR has an on-line lake survey that allows people to search
for information by lake name and/or identification number. The URL to this site is
http:Uwww.dnr.state.mn.us/lakefind/index.html. Staff intends to provide a link to the survey and
a list of city lake OWHs on the City website.
Per the DNR survey, the 2007 (current) OWHs for lakes in Arden Hills are:
-Lake Johanna: 878 feet
-Lake Josephine: 884.4 feet
-Little Lake Johanna: Not listed
-Lake Valentine: 878.7 feet
-Karth Lake: 934.95 feet
-Round Lake: 890 feet
*NOTE: Marsden Lake is not recognized as a lake in the DNR lake survey.
City of Arden Hills
Planning Commission Work Session for .Hatch 4, 2009
P: IPlanninglPlanning Casesl2009W9-003 Shoreland Preservation Ordinance 1030409 - PC report - Shoreland Update.doc
Page 3 of 3
