PARKS, TRAILS AND RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
October 20, 2009
4AL Design Presentation by Derrek Hames (continued)
Derrek Hames reviewed the current sign concept, complete with dimensions and materials used
with the Committee and asked for feedback and comments. Discussion ensued regarding the
proposed signs with the Committee agreeing the signs would bring the trail system together
making them more cohesive City and County-wide.
Chair Peck questioned if the material used would be UV protected. Mr. Hames explained that
the material did provide for a heavy UV protection and was extremely durable.
Ms. Olson noted she walked the trail with Mr. Hames and stated the current proposed sign
location would be near Ken's Market and Glen Paul with an eight foot sign. Mr. Hames
suggested a larger scaled sign as it was a big area and would draw people to the location.
Chair Peck asked if another sign would be posted within the City. Ms. Olson noted the smaller
® sign design would be along the trail to County Road E, at which point a similar large scale sign
would be posted. She noted that Ramsey County would need to make a decision on how they
would continue the signs on the trail.
2. Cost Discussion
Ms. Olson explained that $25,000 was allotted from the CIP for Trail Signage and Benches to be
used over 2009 and 2010. She indicated the signs would not be completed in 2009 and should be
completed in 2010, along with a bench implementation program.
Ms. Olson stated that the current plan, as proposed would be approximately $15,000, allowing
for $10,000 for future benches. The Council would be in favor of dividing the $15,000 between -
signs and benches. She questioned how the Committee would like to proceed with this.
Chair Peck questioned if the smaller trail signs could be combined with a bench. Ms. Olson
reviewed the sign and bench prices. The Committee suggested that H.B. Fuller be approached to
assist in the trail sign and bench purchases.
Chair Peck asked if there were any concerns from the Council at this time. Council Liaison
Holmes stated the number of little vinyl signs were excessive at this time. She indicated she was
in favor of the two entry signs and suggested the smaller interior trail signs be reduced. Mr.
Hames agreed the smaller signs could be reduced and that this would reduce the expense.
Chair Peck suggested a medallion or small sign of some sort be laced on future ark benches
p p
indicate to residents they were on the Elmer L. Andersen trail. Ms. Olson stated this could be
completed to keep the benches trail specific.
