PARKS, TRAILS AND RECREATION COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
October 20, 2009
3. Recommendation
The Committee recommended the trail signs proceed with the proposed design, reducing the
number of smaller vinyl signs with the expense not to exceed $15,000, with the benches being
discussed at a future date.
Ms. Olson indicated Mr. Hames would be presenting this information to the Council on
November 9, 2009 and that she would like a motion from the Committee to bring forward.
MOTION: Committee Member Hilgers motioned to accept the Elmer L. Andersen trail sign
design as presented and that it be recommended to Council, with the number of
small signs being scaled back, seconded by Committee Member Straumann. The
motion carried unanimously.
B. Memorial Bench Policy and Bench Implementation
Ms. Olson reviewed a brochure on the memorial bench policy for the City of Arden Hills and
asked if the Committee would review and comment on. She noted the policy was reviewed by
the City's attorney and that no legal objections were found.
Ms. Olson indicated there was a range in bench prices and that the City could assist with the
pricing if a resident were only able to provide a portion of the bench funding. Ms. Garretson
suggested that there be only a couple of bench styles to provide more uniformity in the benches
throughout the City.
Discussion ensued regarding the bench pricing and bench styles. The Committee agreed to go
with one uniform memorial bench in the royal style with arms.
MOTION: Committee Member Garretson motioned to recommend the adoption of the Arden
Hills Memorial Bench Implementation and Policy, seconded by Committee
Member Straumann. The motion carried unanimously.
Ms. Olson then reviewed a park bench map with the location of existingbenches throughout the
g
City. She noted that the triangles on the map suggest future bench locations.
Ms. Olson indicated that she would be recommending to Council that they implement lement $5,000 in
the CIP for benches each year for the next five years, which would eight equate to benches a
q
year. She explained that the City was currently installing four benches at Linde 's and replacing
Y p g
two in the Chatham Trails next week. Discussion ensued regarding the bench design used b the
g g Y
Eagle Scouts and Ramsey County.
